While at The Coalition I worked on the real-time Gameplay VFX for Gears 5 and the expansion Hivebusters.

In general I repurposed existing textures to make new materials and particle systems, only adding new assets where necessary. I did a pass on most blood impacts and executions in the game, optimizing and adding new elements such as animated meshes from Houdini. I did an optimization pass on all weapon muzzle flashes, tweaking LODs, emitter lifetimes, texture cutouts, GPU particles, etc. I contributed VFX to a few scripted moments and the final boss - the Kraken.

0:05 to 0:33 - Water interaction: splashes, foam, decals on screen, drips on characters. Flock water "tornado" attack. Weapon muzzle flashes, and water impacts. Flock bursting out of the waterfall.

0:34 to 0:54 - Silverback weapons, water interactions, stomp attack, water explosion, blood and gore. Note: rocket attack is comprised of existing materials I remixed into a new explosion.

0:55 to 1:24 - Blood and gore montage. Updated blood screen decal materials using existing textures.

1:25 to 1:28 - Robot being ripped apart. Note: I didn't work on the ice pillar destruction.

1:29 to 1:34 - Continuity only, I didn't work on this shot.

1:35 - Head explosion: blood, gore, glowing decal, fire, sparks, impact dust.

1:42 - Kraken tongue slime and drips.

1:47 - Gun charge up and firing effect. Giant impact flash, decal, blood, and embers.

1:52 - Kraken inhale rain, dust, and debris. Weak spot impact damage. Note: I didn't work on the concrete cover destruction.

2:00 - More Kraken tongue slime and impact damage.
